Dylan Cease, known for his prowess on the pitching mound for the Toronto Blue Jays, has surprised many with his artistic talents, despite not being involved in art during his high school years. His artwork is now being showcased at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), with a special retail collection featuring a painting paying tribute to Toronto on display at the AGO’s Walker Court.
The AGO shop has launched a limited edition collection that includes prints, postcards, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and totes, with all proceeds supporting the AGO’s charitable initiatives. Reflecting on his artistic journey, Cease humorously mentioned that his high school teachers, who knew him more for his theatre background, might have had plenty of critiques about his artwork.
During a recent event at the AGO, Cease engaged with a diverse audience, including kids from summer camps and eager Blue Jays fans who lined up for a chance to meet him. Expressing his surprise at the overwhelming response, Cease remarked on the unexpected scale of the event, emphasizing his gratitude for the opportunity.
Despite being a professional baseball player, Cease delved into painting in 2022 and has already contributed artwork for charitable causes. His Toronto-inspired piece has even found a place in the office of Blue Jays manager John Schneider. Cease, who recently signed a lucrative contract with the Blue Jays, shared his inspiration for the artwork, driven by the prospect of spending a significant part of his career in Toronto.
Looking ahead, Cease plans to broaden his artistic horizons by exploring oil painting. He finds solace and joy in painting, viewing it as a creative outlet that contrasts with the intensity of baseball. Emphasizing the personal fulfillment he gains from painting, Cease expressed his laid-back approach to the craft, underlining the importance of enjoying the process regardless of where his artwork ends up.
