Victor Lai of Canada secured the men’s singles bronze medal at the badminton world championships, successfully defending his title from the previous year. The 21-year-old athlete from Markham, Ontario, seeded seventh, faced a tough match in the semifinals against European champion Alex Lanier of France. Despite a close battle, Lai was defeated with a score of 16-21, 21-13, 21-14 at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi.

In the badminton world championships, both semifinalists who do not progress to the final are awarded bronze medals. Lai made history last year by clinching Canada’s first-ever medal at the tournament when he eliminated the 2021 world champion, Loh Kean Yew of Singapore, in the quarterfinals held in Paris. This year, he continued his impressive performance by defeating Loh in the round of 16 and later overcoming Rasmus Gemke of Denmark in the quarterfinals, securing his second world championship medal.

Over the past year, Lai has made significant strides in the world rankings, moving up from 50th to seventh place. His consistent success and determination have solidified his position as a top contender in the international badminton scene.
