Dawne Young, a former 911 dispatcher, has firsthand experience responding to emergencies. Throughout her career, she handled various distress calls, ranging from house fires to ongoing criminal activities. When the Bald Range wildfire erupted in Summerland, Young felt that the province could have been better prepared for such a crisis.

Young highlighted an incident where not all her family members received the emergency alert when the fire broke out on August 7. Despite standing together, one family member received the alert while the other did not. After evacuating to a friend’s house, Young encountered challenges trying to register as an evacuee.

She downloaded an app and was informed that verifications were only done on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The following day, she managed to get verified online, but was then directed to a reception center, which contradicted the purpose of online registration. Young expressed frustration over the lack of immediate assistance during evacuations.

Young emphasized the need for increased investment in emergency management by the government, especially in wildfire-prone regions like the Okanagan. She stressed that with the current climate change scenario, wildfires are becoming more frequent, making preparedness crucial for both individuals and authorities.

Premier David Eby, during a visit to Penticton, acknowledged the existing faults in the emergency support services system and committed to conducting a comprehensive review. The review will involve experts in wildfires and local governance to address the shortcomings and enhance the response to future emergencies.

Researcher Kathryn McConnell from the University of British Columbia noted that issues with the emergency alert system are not uncommon, citing instances where communication systems get overloaded or inaccessible during emergencies. McConnell suggested exploring analog alert sirens as a backup to the existing telecommunication-based alerts, emphasizing the importance of redundancy in emergency management systems.

In conclusion, the call for a more robust emergency management system, inclusive of multiple alert methods, resonates among experts and affected individuals like Dawne Young, urging authorities to enhance preparedness and response strategies for future disasters.
