Norway is considering a temporary ban on smart glasses in certain public areas to address the potential privacy risks posed by these devices. The government aims to regulate the use of AI glasses in places where privacy is critical, such as healthcare facilities, fitness centers with changing rooms, and areas frequented by children like schools and playgrounds. The proposed ban would also extend to public events and recreational spaces.

The government intends to use the temporary ban to assess which types of devices should be affected and to determine if permanent regulations are necessary. While not advocating for a complete ban, authorities emphasize that smart glasses may still be used in certain locations and for personal use. Exceptions may be made for vulnerable groups to allow socially beneficial uses of smart glasses in specific circumstances.

Privacy advocates have praised Norway’s initiative as a necessary step to safeguard individuals’ privacy rights. Concerns about the misuse of AI glasses have prompted discussions on regulating their usage in various settings globally. Despite efforts by companies like Meta to promote responsible use of smart glasses, some businesses have taken measures to suspend sales of these devices amid growing privacy concerns.

In response to the evolving debate on smart glasses, different countries and organizations are considering policies to limit their use in sensitive environments. For example, the UK Cinema Association has introduced guidelines to restrict the wearing of camera-enabled smart glasses in cinemas due to concerns over privacy and potential piracy issues. The ongoing dialogue surrounding the ethical use of smart glasses continues to shape regulatory approaches worldwide.
