Brooke Henderson is in a good position at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton, with room to improve. The defending champion, hailing from Smiths Falls, Ontario, is aiming for her third victory at Canada’s LPGA tournament. She carded a 68 in the second round on Friday, putting her at 5-under par. As the tournament progresses, Henderson finds herself four shots behind the current leader, Soo Bin Joo of South Korea, who sits at 9 under at Edmonton’s Royal Mayfair Golf Club.

Despite being 7 under earlier in the round, Henderson experienced a setback with two bogeys on the back nine. During her second-last tee shot, she accidentally hit a spectator with a wayward shot that veered left. Henderson promptly apologized to the spectator and gave her a golf ball as a gesture of goodwill.

Aphrodite Deng from Calgary, last year’s low amateur in Mississauga, Ontario, ended her round strongly with consecutive birdies, finishing at 3 under with a score of 67.

In this $2.75 million US event, the top 65 players, and those tied with them, will advance to the next round. Canadian teenagers Anna Huang from Vancouver and Michelle Xing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, who were three shots behind the lead at 5 under at the start of the day, had afternoon tee times.
