Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy faces renewed pressure to conduct wartime elections, despite constitutional restrictions on such elections during martial law. Mykhailo Fedorov, a popular former defense minister recently ousted from his government position, has advocated for finding a legal and safe mechanism to enable Ukraine to resume its democratic processes during the ongoing conflict with Russia.

While some argue that holding elections amidst the current war is impractical, the political implications of the election discourse are significant for Zelenskyy. Tymofiy Mylovanov, a former government minister, noted that Fedorov’s push for elections has sparked domestic political discussions without necessarily advancing the immediate likelihood of their occurrence.

Fedorov, known for his tech-savvy and reformist approach in Zelenskyy’s government, was dismissed in July after serving as defense minister since January. Despite calls to reinstate him, Zelenskyy appointed Yevhenii Khmara to the defense ministry role. The feasibility of holding elections amid the ongoing conflict with Russia has raised concerns among experts and activists, with some questioning the practicality of organizing a vote given the current situation with refugees, internal displacement, and military service.

The prospect of wartime elections remains contentious, with concerns about potential risks to national unity and vulnerability to external interference. Zelenskyy’s administration has not directly responded to Fedorov’s election call, emphasizing the challenges posed by Russia’s military actions. The debate over elections during wartime continues to unfold, with implications for Ukraine’s political landscape and international relations.
