Calgary resident Curtis Geiger experienced a week filled with highs and lows. After discovering that the 50/50 ticket he bought at the Calgary Stampede rodeo on July 11 was a winning ticket worth $125,150, Geiger was initially elated. However, his excitement was short-lived when he failed to claim the prize within the 48-hour window.

Following his realization that he missed the deadline, Geiger reached out to the Calgary Stampede, only to receive a disappointing response stating that all prizes for the Show Band 50/50 draw had either been claimed or the claim period had expired. Despite feeling upset and frustrated with himself and the organization, Geiger is still coming to terms with the situation.

The Calgary Stampede, under a lottery license from Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC), explained that the 48-hour claim period is a crucial aspect of the lottery rules. The organization emphasized the necessity to administer the lottery consistently and in compliance with the approved regulations.

Geiger pointed out that the ticket did not specify the 48-hour claim window, leading to his confusion and disappointment. He questioned the brevity of the claim period and expressed concerns about how the unclaimed funds were handled.

Legal expert Farhad Shekib suggested that Geiger might have grounds for a breach of contract case based on the clarity and fairness of the claim period communication. Geiger is now contemplating his legal options while advocating for improved transparency to prevent similar incidents in the future.
