A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta has seen an increase in interest following a mention in a popular American TV show, raising hopes for a busy summer season. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was featured in a recent episode of the acclaimed medical drama series, “The Pitt.” The character Dr. Michael (Robby) Robinavitch, portrayed by actor Noah Wyle, expresses his intention to visit the landmark located in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, situated approximately 150 kilometers south of Calgary, holds historical significance as a site where Indigenous people herded bison and drove them over an 11-meter cliff for harvesting. The interpretive center, integrated into the sandstone cliff with cascading floors, delves into Blackfoot culture, local ecology, and archaeological discoveries, guiding visitors along a cliff-top trail.
Quinton Crow Shoe, the marketing lead at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, mentioned that the show’s reference has piqued the interest of visitors, prompting them to explore the offbeat destination. The site has witnessed a surge in social media engagement and inquiries following the TV mention, indicating a heightened awareness and curiosity among potential visitors.
Designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump typically attracts around 60,000 visitors annually. Crow Shoe remains optimistic about the sustained interest surrounding the buffalo jump and anticipates a rise in visitor numbers and tour bookings during the upcoming peak season from May to September. Additional promotional efforts, including discounts offered through the national Canada Strong Pass, have contributed positively to visitor traffic.
Notably, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump forms part of a network of attractions in southern Alberta, complementing destinations like Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park and Waterton Lakes National Park. This collaborative approach aims to encourage visitors to explore the diverse offerings of the region. The provincial marketing agency, Travel Alberta, seized the opportunity to release a promotional video featuring characters from the TV show against the backdrop of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump’s cliffs.
Alberta’s Culture Minister, Tanya Fir, shared the TV clip on social media, emphasizing the significance of Alberta’s history and cultural landmarks in leaving a lasting impression on global audiences. The collective efforts of stakeholders, coupled with the recent exposure from “The Pitt,” are expected to enhance the visibility and appeal of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump in the tourism landscape.
