Visiting the Billy Bishop Legion in Vancouver’s Kitsilano area on an ordinary Thursday may unveil an unexpected scene.
While veterans relax with drinks in the traditional English-style pub serving as the primary lounge, upstairs, one can witness modern yoga enthusiasts unrolling their mats beside vintage military artifacts.
“I find solace in stretching here, feeling connected and part of a community,” shared Hannah, a 37-year-old yoga enthusiast who prefers using only her first name, setting up for a recent class.
In an effort to engage younger individuals like Hannah, Legions nationwide, traditionally dominated by veterans, are now adopting strategies such as hosting innovative events, offering affordable dining options, and fostering a sense of community sought by many. This year, in celebration of the Royal Canadian Legion’s centenary, new members are granted complimentary membership upon joining.
Furthermore, Legion volunteers stress that prior military service is not a prerequisite for entry.
“Although I haven’t served, both my grandfather and uncle have military backgrounds, connecting me to them through the pictures and stories here; it feels like home,” explained Hannah during her repeated visits.
Backing Veterans, Embracing New Members
Legions have historically served as pillars for veteran support, organizing Remembrance Day ceremonies, communal gatherings like Sunday dinners, and memorial services. Nujma Bond, national spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Legion, highlights that while preserving these fundamental functions, many branches are evolving successfully.
“This period marks a transition for the Legion, where our traditional practices will endure while we anticipate growth,” Bond conveyed to CBC News.
“We are witnessing a significant surge in new members, ideas, and vitality, which will introduce numerous enhancements to our existing operations.”
As per the Legion’s national headquarters, over 100,000 new members have already been welcomed in 2026, pushing the total membership count beyond 300,000.
