Ukraine’s defense industry is collaborating with European partners to develop a new missile system as a replacement for the US Patriot missile, designed to counter Russia’s ballistic threats effectively.

The move comes as Ukraine’s President implied delays in receiving the crucial Patriots could be a strategic maneuver by the US to weaken Kyiv during future peace negotiations. Recent ballistic attacks by Kremlin forces in Ukraine have resulted in at least 13 casualties, coinciding with Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s energy infrastructure using advanced drone technology.

Fire Point, a Ukrainian drone and missile manufacturer, has struck deals with twelve European defense companies to provide radar and guidance systems for the Freyja missile project. This joint initiative, endorsed by ten European governments and twelve major defense corporations like Eurosam, Leonardo, Thales, and SAAB, was officially launched in Paris last month.

Ukraine currently relies on US-made Patriot missiles to intercept high-speed ballistic threats posed by Putin’s arsenal. However, global shortages of these interceptor missiles, worsened by conflicts in Iran, have left Ukraine vulnerable and prompted urgent actions by President Zelensky.

Recent attacks in Kyiv resulted in 17 fatalities from missile and drone strikes, with an additional 13 deaths reported in subsequent assaults by Russian forces. President Putin’s aggressive missile attacks have underscored the critical need for timely support from European and US allies to safeguard Ukrainian lives.

Firepoint’s CEO, Iryna Terekh, expressed optimism about the progress of the new missile project, emphasizing the importance of integrating surveillance radars, tracking systems, and seekers efficiently. The company aims to accelerate the project timeline and reduce the missile cost to approximately £800,000 each, substantially less than the price of a Patriot missile. Testings of the new European-Ukrainian interceptor missile have reportedly been successful in five trials.
