Recent statistics reveal that nine individuals, including four children, have tragically drowned since the commencement of the summer break, following school closures.
One of the incidents involved the unfortunate death of a 14-year-old who encountered difficulties in the River Thames at Millwall Outer Dock, located in east London. Local reports indicate that the area had been a popular spot for youths seeking relief from the heat in prior weeks.
Authorities conducted a thorough search lasting nearly four hours before recovering the teenager’s body from the river. A 14-year-old girl, who visited the scene with her mother to place flowers, emotionally recounted how she and other witnesses attempted to rescue the boy.
According to the teenager, several individuals jumped into the water together, but one of the boys failed to resurface. Describing the situation, she stated, “We initially thought it was a prank, but when they began crying, we realized the severity of the situation.”
Since the onset of warm weather in mid-May, a total of 42 fatalities have been recorded in open waters. Among the victims was five-year-old Letti Cole, who tragically passed away after being discovered unconscious in water in Badsey, Worcestershire, just last week.
The family of Letti, including her aunt Hayley Cole, expressed profound grief and shock, emphasizing the devastating loss they have experienced. The mourning extended to the deaths of two other children, Samiha Rahman, 15, and her seven-year-old cousin Musa Ahmed, who lost their lives in a triple drowning incident at Mersea Island, Essex, on July 22.
Furthermore, an investigation into a dual tragedy at Fistral Beach, Cornwall, on July 26 revealed that John Collins, aged 66, bravely attempted to save his 32-year-old daughter Samantha Collins before both tragically drowned.
In response to these distressing events, The Mirror has initiated the Save Lives For Sam water safety campaign this summer, urging immediate action to address the escalating drowning crisis in Britain. Notably, Andy Burnham recently endorsed this campaign, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about the risks associated with open water swimming, particularly for non-regular swimmers, and advocating for enhanced water safety measures and swimming support in educational curricula.
