Emergency services responded to a major collision involving two lorries on the M1 just after 10 pm on Tuesday. The incident led to overturned vehicles and the closure of the road for an extended period.

The M1 northbound between J16 Northampton and J18 Crick is completely blocked due to the crash. Authorities anticipate that the closure will last well into the morning to allow for the complex recovery process.

Traffic is heavily congested in the area, with significant delays reported on the approach to the closure. The National Highways agency has indicated that the northbound section between J16 and J18 is still inaccessible, while lanes three and four on the southbound carriageway are also blocked.

Officials have confirmed that the M1 is expected to remain shut for several more hours as investigations by Northants Police continue. Motorists are advised to follow diversion routes marked with a hollow triangle symbol.

National Highways Traffic Officers and contractors are on-site to manage the traffic situation and assist with emergency response measures. Delays are currently estimated at 22 minutes with three miles of congestion.

The ongoing closure is causing queues and disruptions, with the road closure likely to persist until later in the day. Drivers are urged to plan alternative routes or delay their journeys if impacted by the closure.

Efforts are underway to release trapped traffic within the closure on the northbound stretch between J16 and J18. The situation remains dynamic as emergency services work to clear the affected lanes and manage the aftermath of the collision.
