Next, a prominent fashion retailer, has increased its profit forecast for the third time this year due to a significant boost in sales driven by a heatwave. Sales surged by 9.2% in the 13 weeks leading up to August, surpassing the predicted 4% increase and adding an extra £70 million to the company’s earnings. Next now anticipates annual sales exceeding £6 billion and profits growing by over 7% to £1.24 billion.

Within the UK, sales rose by 2.8%, propelled by online shopping while in-store sales declined. Additionally, online international sales saw a remarkable 37% year-on-year increase, according to the latest investor update.

The company attributed this exceptional performance to hotter-than-expected weather in the UK during June and July, along with increased investment in successful marketing campaigns. Moreover, pent-up demand in the Middle East and Northern Europe following a slow start to the year in those regions contributed to the positive results.

Next’s overseas business was impacted by the Iran conflict that began in February, particularly affecting sales in the Middle East, which account for about 6% of the company’s annual sales. To counter this, Next plans to implement price increases of up to 8% in certain international markets.

Market experts have praised Next’s resilience and strategic moves, with shares rising by 7% in early trading. Richard Hunter from Interactive Investor commended Next for exceeding expectations and achieving another profit upgrade for the year.

Analysts highlighted the company’s ability to adapt to market dynamics and capitalize on emerging opportunities, particularly in the international segment. The positive outlook for Next’s profitability has provided much-needed certainty in a rapidly changing business landscape.

Recent data also indicated a rise in retail sales in June, attributed to increased consumer spending on cooling products and clothing. Consumer sentiment improved, driven by optimism surrounding political changes despite global uncertainties such as the Iran conflict.

The overall economic outlook appears positive, with various indicators pointing towards growth fueled by favorable weather conditions and other external factors.
