A 19-year-old cheerleader from Louisiana State University tragically passed away after reportedly being sexually assaulted by three men in a car. Madison Brooks was ejected from the vehicle and later fatally hit by a truck in 2023. The trial of Desmond Carter, one of the accused individuals, is scheduled to commence on August 17.

Desmond Carter, along with Kaivon Washington and Casen Carver, faces charges of rape in connection to the incident. Prosecutors claim that the assault took place in a car following a night of drinking at a bar. However, the defendants maintain that the encounter with Brooks was consensual.

Video footage captured Brooks wandering into traffic, with reports indicating her blood-alcohol level was nearly four times the legal limit at .319%. She tragically stepped into the road and was struck by a passing truck.

In legal documents from the previous year, Carver and Carter’s legal representatives disputed the claims of sexual assault on Brooks, suggesting that injuries found on her body may have resulted from consensual activity with another LSU student the night before.

A motion was filed by Carter’s defense team to prevent supporters of Brooks from wearing her favorite color in court, citing concerns about potential jury intimidation. The Brooks family and their allies have been donning pink attire to honor the memory of the deceased student.

The defense has raised objections about creating a “carnival atmosphere” in the courtroom, arguing that it could prejudice the trial process. Prosecutors have denounced these arguments as misrepresentations of the case facts.
