Oil company BP faced criticism following a significant increase in profits amidst a drought and soaring energy costs in the UK. The company reported earnings of £4.2 billion in just three months, marking its largest quarterly profit since 2022. This surge was attributed to higher oil and gas prices driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Environmental activists expressed outrage at BP and other energy firms profiting while many regions worldwide battle extreme weather conditions. They called for a shift away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy to combat rising energy bills and climate-related challenges.

BP’s second-quarter profits rose by 144%, benefiting from market instability caused by geopolitical tensions like the US-Iran conflict. The new Prime Minister is under pressure to balance energy affordability with net-zero emission goals, as calls for increased drilling in the North Sea are debated.

BP recently announced the sale of its North Sea operations after over 60 years of production in the region. CEO Meg O’Neill emphasized the importance of collaboration between businesses and the government to ensure energy security and economic benefits. O’Neill, who took on the role in April, stands to receive substantial compensation, including bonuses and rewards, highlighting the lucrative nature of the industry.
