A state of emergency has been declared following the sudden eruption of one of Central America’s most perilous volcanoes. Volcán de Fuego, renowned for its high activity levels, erupted in Guatemala on Monday, escalating throughout the day, emitting molten lava, ash, and smoke into the atmosphere.
Authorities promptly raised the country’s second-highest emergency alert and swiftly evacuated residents from the vicinity. The Guatemalan disaster agency, Conred, announced a nationwide orange alert due to the volcano’s eruption, undertaking evacuations from nearby villages.
Conred issued updated guidance for those impacted by the eruption, advising them to gather essential supplies, evacuate independently, and steer clear of ravines near the lava flow. Evacuees sought refuge in a nearby shelter while ongoing monitoring of the area continues.
In June 2018, Fuego’s deadliest eruption resulted in nearly 200 fatalities, marking the largest eruption in the region since 1974. The aftermath included significant casualties, injuries, and missing persons, with estimates suggesting a potentially higher death toll.
Guatemala, situated on the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire,” frequently experiences seismic and volcanic events. Recent eruptions in 2023 led to evacuations, highlighting the region’s susceptibility to volcanic activities. Authorities are monitoring the escalating volcanic activity, with lava flowing down the mountain’s southwest side.
Volcán de Fuego, located in Central America’s Sierra Madre mountain range, remains a tourist attraction despite its continuous low-level activity, characterized by ash emissions and occasional explosions. While major eruptions are less common, this marks the ninth significant eruption since 2015.
