Nigel Farage’s controversial proposal to address small boat crossings has been met with criticism for being both impractical and illegal. The Reform UK leader recently unveiled a plan that suggests using the Royal Navy to intercept Channel crossings. However, France quickly opposed the idea, stating that it would violate French sovereignty and maritime laws.

The UK government, including Downing Street, also dismissed Farage’s 25-page proposal, citing past unsuccessful attempts to reduce crossings using similar measures. Charities expressed concerns that the plan could lead to more fatalities.

Farage’s announcement came amidst allegations of sleaze and declining poll ratings. The plan, known as Operation Fortress, involves deploying 10 navy vessels to intercept small boats in the Channel. Despite Reform’s claims of a humanitarian approach, critics, including the Refugee Council, warned of increased dangers for people attempting the crossing.

The proposed policy has sparked tensions between Britain, France, and Belgium. Farage defended the plan, stating that the Royal Navy’s role in protecting the country is crucial. The Reform document mentioned a minimal risk of confrontation with France and emphasized the mission’s humanitarian nature.

In light of recent polling setbacks and scrutiny over a £5 million donation, Farage’s leadership and political future face uncertainties. Allegations of financial deals and investigations into donations to Reform further compound the challenges for Farage and his party. Labour Party officials have called for transparency, accusing Reform of unethical practices and attempting to evade accountability.
