A young child tragically passed away due to heatstroke after being left in a vehicle during extreme heat on a popular Spanish island. The 20-month-old toddler was rushed to Fuerteventura General Hospital in critical condition before being airlifted to a hospital on Gran Canaria. Unfortunately, the boy succumbed to the heat-related illness at Materno Infantil University Hospital in Las Palmas.

The details surrounding the incident are still unclear, with reports indicating the child was left inside the car. The Canary Islands experienced sweltering temperatures reaching 45C over the weekend, with a persistent heatwave affecting the region. Gran Canaria and parts of Tenerife were under red and orange heat alerts, respectively.

This tragic event echoes a similar incident where an 18-month-old girl named Sofia lost her life last month after being left in a transport vehicle near Lisbon for several hours. The child was reportedly forgotten in the vehicle parked near the Cristo Rei shrine in Almada. Despite numerous passersby near the tourist spot, no one noticed the child inside the closed vehicle with temperatures hitting 30C.

The girl’s mother discovered her absence when she went to pick her up from the nursery in the afternoon. Emergency services were called, but the child was found in critical condition and could not be revived. The nursery involved, Colegio Mestre Cuco, is now under police investigation.

In another heartbreaking incident during a heatwave in southeastern France, two children aged two and four were found deceased in their family car in Carpentras. These devastating occurrences serve as stark reminders of the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles during hot weather.
