Donald Trump’s major renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, costing millions of pounds, has been acknowledged as rushed and poorly executed by the Justice Department. This revelation comes in light of a court filing by US Attorney Jeanine Pirro, admitting the discrepancies in previous claims made by both President Trump and herself regarding vandals being responsible for the pool’s damages.

The Justice Department has now abandoned a criminal case against former Olympian David Hearn, citing new evidence that contradicts the initial belief that vandals were behind the damage. Documents provided by the Interior Department indicated that the pool’s issues stemmed from faulty installation by a contractor and the project’s rushed completion before the America 250 celebration in 2026.

A recent inspection unveiled widespread damage in the pool, including at the center where it would be unlikely for a vandal to tamper. Pirro’s court filing emphasized the challenge of proving vandalism beyond a reasonable doubt given the new information, urging the dismissal of the case against Hearn.

Hearn’s legal team criticized the government’s actions, stating that the case was unwarranted and calling for an apology for the unjust arrest and charges against their client. Trump’s ambitious $14 million renovation project aimed to revamp the pool with a protective coating described as “American flag blue,” but as issues arose, Trump alleged, without evidence, that vandals were to blame.

The case against Hearn faced ongoing obstacles, with Hearn and his supporters maintaining his innocence amidst allegations of political motives behind the prosecution. Recent revelations from grand jury transcripts highlighted pre-existing damage to the pool, casting doubt on the accusations against Hearn.

Prosecutors acknowledged the new information that refuted the vandalism claims, indicating a shift in their understanding of the pool’s condition. Hearn, who faced felony charges for property destruction, denied causing deliberate damage to the pool and asserted his compliance with park officials during the incident.

Hearn, a 67-year-old athlete from Bethesda, Maryland, with a history of Olympic participation, found himself entangled in a legal battle that now seems to be unraveling as evidence points away from his culpability.
