A massive sinkhole that appeared on a high street has finally been repaired after 18 months. The sinkhole in Godstone, Surrey, caused evacuations, business closures, and traffic disruptions. The reopening of the road brought relief to residents and local businesses who faced challenges during the repair process.

Engineers worked for months to secure the area and discovered an old mine network beneath the street, which complicated the restoration efforts. Approximately 1,100 tonnes of grout were used to stabilize the underground tunnels, followed by the replacement of damaged water pipes and the reconstruction of the road and sidewalks.

Matt Furniss of Surrey County Council expressed satisfaction with the completion of the road repairs, thanking the community for their patience. The focus was always on ensuring safety and stability for residents and travelers passing through the area.

SES Water also finished replacing damaged water mains before the street’s reopening. Ground investigations, installation of new water mains, and testing were part of the project. Residents and businesses were appreciated for their understanding during the essential maintenance work.

Local residents, like Toria Willson, highlighted the inconveniences caused by the road closure. She described the area turning into a parking lot for vehicles during the prolonged repair period. The reopening of Godstone High Street was a significant relief for the community after enduring months of disruptions.
