A British woman, Elisabeth-Jane Ross, aged 38, was found deceased in a suitcase in Athens. Prior to her demise, she had informed her Greek acquaintances that she intended to spend time with unidentified American individuals in the Kypseli area of Athens.
The discovery was made by a homeless individual who noticed a leg protruding from the suitcase in an abandoned structure on Evelpidon Street in the Kypseli neighborhood around 1 pm on July 18.
According to the Daily Mail, Ross had been residing with friends in the Keratsini district near the main port of Athens. On July 15, she informed them of her plans to relocate to Kypseli to stay with American acquaintances.
A police source stated that Ross did not provide detailed information to her Greek friends about her plans with the American group, and authorities have cleared her Greek associates of any suspicion after obtaining crucial information from them.
Investigations are ongoing to determine if messages were sent from Ross’s phone posthumously to create the impression that she was still alive. Family members and friends received messages indicating her desire for solitude and a need for personal time. It is believed that the phone remained active in the Athens vicinity until shortly before her identification and subsequent shutdown.
Born in Scotland in February 1988, Ross is presumed to have passed away five to seven days before her body was discovered. She reportedly traveled from Cyprus to Greece last month, as reported by Greek public broadcaster ERT.
Identification of Ross was achieved through her fingerprints using Interpol and US databases, as her DNA did not match any records in Greece. Initial forensic examinations did not reveal any apparent injuries or signs of a struggle, although a post-mortem examination is anticipated to determine the cause of death.
Police Scotland has been in contact with Greek authorities following the death of the Scottish woman in Athens, providing support to her family in Scotland. Additionally, the Foreign Office expressed condolences to Ross’s family and confirmed the provision of consular assistance while collaborating with local authorities.
