Veteran Member of Parliament Diane Abbott has been reinstated in the Labour Party after serving a one-year suspension. A Labour spokesperson confirmed that Ms. Abbott, the longest-serving MP in the Commons, was allowed back into the party on Tuesday, along with another suspended MP, Joani Reid. Both MPs have had the parliamentary Labour whip restored, enabling them to resume their roles as Labour MPs in the House of Commons.

Ms. Abbott, the first black woman to hold a seat in the chamber, was suspended for reiterating comments on racism for which she had previously apologized. In a statement, the Labour Party emphasized the importance of high standards for elected representatives and members, assessing any alleged breaches independently and without political interference.

Following a process under Labour Party rules and approved by the independent review board, Diane Abbott and Joani Reid have been readmitted to the party, with the Labour whip reinstated. Ms. Abbott issued an apology following the conclusion of the independent process, acknowledging the need for elected representatives to be mindful of their platform and associated responsibilities.

In a social media post, Ms. Abbott expressed gratitude for her readmission to the Labour Party after an internal process. She also acknowledged and apologized for a previous tweet that caused offense by conflating the actions of the Israeli Defense Forces with the Jewish community, reaffirming her lifelong commitment to anti-racism.

Joani Reid voluntarily suspended herself from the Labour whip after her husband was arrested on suspicion of spying for China. While not personally under investigation, she chose to refrain from sitting as a Labour MP until the probe concluded. Ms. Reid, the granddaughter of trade unionist Jimmy Reid, expressed eagerness to support the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, and renew Scottish Labour with her reinstatement in the Parliamentary Labour Party.
