A young driver, Liberty Mitchell, who filmed herself speeding at nearly 100mph before causing a fatal crash that claimed the lives of two individuals, has been given an additional three years in prison. Mitchell, 21, had just obtained her driver’s license when she caused a collision that resulted in the deaths of taxi driver Octavian Codreanu and his passenger Moyra Whelan in December 2022. Driving at 96mph in a 60mph zone, she attempted to overtake multiple vehicles on the wrong side of the road in her Mini Cooper, leading to a serious accident.

Following the incident near Aldsworth, Gloucestershire, Mitchell was apprehended at the scene. In February, she received a sentence of six years and eight months, with a requirement to serve at least half of her term in custody before being considered for parole. However, after an appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme, her sentence was extended to nine years and three months by senior judges who deemed the initial punishment insufficient.

Attorney General Ellie Reeves KC MP expressed satisfaction with the revised sentence, emphasizing the tragic consequences of Mitchell’s reckless behavior. Mitchell had previously showcased her speeding exploits on social media, displaying a blatant disregard for the safety of others. The crash resulted in the immediate deaths of Mr. Codreanu and Ms. Whelan, with several others sustaining severe injuries, including fractured hips, broken ribs, and internal injuries.

During the trial, Judge Lowe condemned Mitchell’s actions, highlighting her lack of driving experience and reckless attitude that led to the irreversible impact on multiple lives. Sergeant Williams of the Serious Collision Investigation Team commended Mitchell for admitting guilt and accepting the consequences of her actions. The aftermath of the collision left a lasting impact on the victims, witnesses, and families involved, with December 2, 2022, forever etched in their memories. The authorities extended their condolences to those affected by the tragic event and praised the resilience and cooperation of everyone throughout the lengthy legal process.
