Matthew Hollingham has successfully completed an extraordinary triathlon spanning from the Arctic to Africa in honor of his late fiancée. Over the course of 61 days, the 25-year-old Matthew swam, cycled, and ran a total of 2,500 miles, crossing through 10 countries, covering nearly the entire length of continental Europe.

This remarkable achievement is believed to be the world’s longest A-to-B ironman triathlon, all done in memory of Lovisa Arnesson-Cronhamre, tragically killed by a hit-and-run driver in 2023. Matthew expressed, “I dedicated this journey to Lovisa, and I would undertake it again just to have one more moment with her. She will forever remain my fiancée.”

His charitable endeavor concluded in Tangiers, Morocco, where he recounted the challenges faced, including swimming 2.5 miles in the Arctic Circle, running 37 consecutive marathons, cycling through eight countries non-stop for 61 days. Matthew endured various hardships such as mild hypothermia, muscle strain, extreme weather conditions, and mechanical issues with his support vehicle.

Proudly supporting him throughout his journey, Matthew’s mother, Sue, shared, “Matthew has embarked on a path of grief, love, and acceptance. Witnessing his physical struggles was difficult as a mother, but I am immensely proud of his 61-day triathlon that tested his endurance to the fullest.”

Quadruple World Ironman champion Chrissie Wellington praised Matthew’s feat as “mind-bendingly epic.” The fundraiser, aimed at supporting children’s charities including Save the Children, was a joint effort by Matthew and Lovisa, both former students of the University of Glasgow.

The documentary capturing Matthew’s triathlon, filmed by his friend Jack Hughes, will be showcased at the Centre Film Festival in Pennsylvania in November. Jack highlighted, “Through Matt’s experience with loss, he has shown that grief can be channeled into something positive, providing a different perspective on overcoming loss in memory of a loved one.”

Prior to this triathlon, Matthew, an Everton fan from Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, had already undertaken challenging expeditions, including a 450-mile hike from Glasgow to London and a rapid traverse of northern England along Hadrian’s Wall.

Funds raised from the initiative will also contribute to a graduate student scholarship in physics at Penn, established by Lovisa’s parents to honor their daughter’s legacy. Those willing to contribute to the cause can do so by using the provided link for donations.
