A former teacher’s attempt to reduce his prison sentence for sexually assaulting a vulnerable student has been denied by the Court of Appeal. Simon Taylor, an Army veteran, was sentenced to four years and six months for various offenses against a teenage girl at Norwich Crown Court. The incidents occurred over a span of more than two years, starting when the victim was a student at Hethersett Academy in Norfolk, where Taylor was employed as a teacher.

Following the victim’s report, Taylor confessed to two counts of sexual assault, including an incident in his car, as well as an offense of sexual activity with a child in a position of trust and two counts of sexual communication with a child. During the appeal process, Taylor’s legal team argued that his sentence was excessive and that the sentencing judge did not adequately consider mitigating factors, such as Taylor’s post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) resulting from a combat injury in Afghanistan.

However, the appeal was rejected by three senior judges who emphasized the victim’s vulnerability and Taylor’s disregard for warnings about his actions. They stated that the victim had been manipulated and groomed by Taylor, leading to a significant increase in his sentence. The judges highlighted that Taylor’s actions were aggravated by his position of trust at the school.

Additionally, it was noted that Taylor had communicated with the girl through the school’s messaging platform and attempted to delete messages to conceal evidence. Taylor, observing the proceedings from HMP Littlehey in Cambridgeshire, showed no reaction as his appeal was dismissed. In addition to his prison term, Taylor was mandated to register as a sex offender, subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, a restraining order, and prohibited from working with children.
