A former violin instructor at the Royal College of Music (RCM) facing allegations of sexual assault on a potential student claimed he was demonstrating techniques to enhance her performance skills.

Jan Repko, aged 68 and originally from South Africa, is accused of inappropriate behavior towards a woman during a consultation session in 2022.

During a session described as a “taster session” at Southwark Crown Court, Repko met the complainant to listen to her violin performance.

The accusations include claims that he touched her inappropriately and engaged in unwanted advances during the lesson.

Repko, who has also taught at prestigious music schools in Manchester, is currently on trial for alleged sexual misconduct.

In his defense, Repko stated that he provided exercises aimed at helping the student relax and improve her musical abilities.

One of the exercises involved a technique to relax the hand by positioning the fingers correctly on the instrument.

He clarified that he conducted the exercises while seated and did not need to stand up.

According to Repko, the student quickly grasped the techniques and performed well during the lesson.

He praised her intelligence and ability to follow instructions effectively.

Repko emphasized that the exercises were intended to promote relaxation and correct posture.

During the lesson, he asked the student to stand straight and lean back as part of an exercise.

The court heard conflicting testimonies regarding the incident, with the student claiming she felt uncomfortable and violated by Repko’s actions.

Despite the allegations, Repko maintained that he obtained the student’s consent before any physical contact and believed the exercises were beneficial for her musical development.

He expressed satisfaction with the progress made during the lesson and noted an improvement in the sound of the violin.

The Royal College of Music, established in 1883, maintains its reputation as a leading institution in the performing arts field.

Residing in Walworth, south-east London, the musician denies all charges brought against him.

The trial is ongoing.
