An ongoing trial has heard that a teacher, Deborah Franklin, 65, is facing accusations of engaging in gross indecency with a boy in the 1990s. The alleged incidents occurred when the boy, aged between nine and 12, was under Franklin’s private tutoring. Denying the charges, Franklin, who taught at a preparatory school in Hertfordshire, is said to have been trusted by the boy’s family.
Prosecutors claim that Franklin exposed herself to the boy, kissed him, encouraged him to touch her inappropriately, and engaged in various sexual acts at both her residence and the boy’s house. However, Franklin disputes these allegations, stating she has no recollection of tutoring the boy.
During the trial, it was revealed that the complainant accused Franklin of tying him to her bed and blindfolding him during one incident. Another claim made was that Franklin mentioned her husband’s name during a sexual encounter. The prosecutor highlighted that others had observed Franklin spending time in the boy’s bedroom without any educational activities taking place, questioning the motive for fabrication.
Emphasizing the changes in societal norms over the years, the prosecutor noted that Franklin’s behavior might have been perceived differently during the alleged period due to higher levels of trust. The defense argued that the complainant’s account had inconsistencies and urged the jury to consider the implausibility of the alleged events given the circumstances.
Judge Kamran Choudhry informed the jury that the prosecution asserts the complainant has consistently disclosed the allegations to various individuals over the years. Franklin maintains that her interactions with the boy were appropriate and not unusual for a teacher-student relationship, citing common social interactions between teachers and pupils.
During police interviews, Franklin claimed difficulty in recalling the tutoring sessions but mentioned recollections triggered by old photographs. While the prosecution accused Franklin of selective memory, she denied intentionally withholding information about the past events.
As the trial continues, both sides present conflicting narratives, leaving the case to be decided by the court.
