An inquiry has been initiated following the mysterious discovery of 14 deceased elephants near a national park in Africa.
The lifeless bodies were found scattered within a range of 15km to 30km from the boundaries of the Amboseli National Park. Situated in the southern part of Kenya in eastern Africa, this area is known as the Amboseli ecosystem.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has stated that specialists are conducting examinations on the carcasses. According to reports by the BBC, tissue samples have been dispatched to laboratories to determine the cause of death, considering possibilities such as disease and poisoning.
This incident marks the first time in many years that such a large number of elephant fatalities have been documented in the African region. Notably, poaching, which involves the unlawful hunting and killing of wild animals, has been effectively addressed in the vicinity.
KWS mentioned that there is currently no conclusive evidence pinpointing a single cause for the demise of all 14 elephants. The deceased elephants vary in age and sex, indicating that the deaths are not confined to a specific family or age group.
Researchers from the University of Nairobi, who are investigating the deaths, have reportedly detected a suspected toxin in some of the elephants’ remains. Ongoing analyses are being carried out to ascertain if this substance contributed to the deaths, as reported by local news outlets.
In addition to toxicology examinations, KWS is delving into various environmental factors such as water sources and potential contaminants to ascertain if the elephants were exposed to a common hazard.
The Amboseli ecosystem, which borders Tanzania, a renowned wildlife destination, is home to over 2,000 elephants as per data from the Amboseli Trust for Elephants from the previous year.
