A duo has been sentenced following the discovery of cocaine traces in a 12-week-old infant under their care. Kevin Fields, 29, received a two-year jail term, while Ella Jones, 28, was handed a suspended two-year sentence after admitting to causing harm or neglect to the child.

At Chester Crown Court, it was revealed that police were alerted by a pediatrician about the baby’s condition, found unconscious upon arrival at A&E on May 27, 2025. Observations at Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Cheshire indicated the couple’s potential drug influence and lack of concern for the infant’s well-being.

After the baby was admitted to a ward, Fields and Jones left the hospital, cautioning nurses that they might be unreachable due to sleep. Subsequent toxicology tests confirmed cocaine presence in the baby, which was deemed responsible for the child’s unresponsiveness.

Fields and Jones were apprehended on June 3 and confessed to using cocaine while in the baby’s presence. They acknowledged a prior medical incident with the child but failed to seek medical help as the baby recovered on its own.

Evidence from Fields’ phone demonstrated a cocaine purchase just before the baby’s second episode. Both pleaded guilty and were sentenced last Tuesday, with Jones receiving a suspended two-year sentence along with rehabilitation activity days, mental health treatment, and community service, while Fields was incarcerated for two years.

Following the verdict, Sergeant Ann Muldowney of Cheshire Police emphasized the severe health risks of Class A drugs like cocaine and condemned the couple’s neglectful actions towards a vulnerable infant. She urged the public to report any suspicions of child neglect or abuse to Cheshire Police for thorough investigation.
