German police have fatally shot the individual believed to be the driver of a van that rammed into a crowd near Berlin’s Pride festival, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to at least 29 people.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Abdul Ballout, who was accused of being involved in terrorism, confronted law enforcement officers with a weapon before being gunned down by the police. Authorities managed to locate the suspect in an allotment garden in Spandau, West Berlin.

Prior to the confrontation, authorities had issued a warning about approaching Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese descent, as he was deemed armed and dangerous.

Polizei Berlin confirmed that the suspect involved in the previous day’s attack in the Grosser Tiergarten was found in an allotment garden in Spandau at around 6 pm. The suspect reportedly charged at the emergency responders with a stabbing weapon, leading to the use of police firearms. Despite efforts to revive him, the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Witnesses described hearing gunfire during the operation at the garden shed.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt indicated that the suspect had a history of criminal activities and ties to radicalization and the Islamist community in Berlin, suggesting that the incident was likely an act of Islamic terrorism.

The attack took place around 10 pm on Saturday, close to a party near the Brandenburg Gate that marked the end of Berlin’s Pride festival. A white van drove into the Tiergarten Park, striking multiple individuals in a crowd, which included festival attendees and other visitors, before crashing into a tree.

Ashley Jump, a 26-year-old British individual who attended the parade on Saturday but left before the attack, returned the next day to pay respects at a memorial, emphasizing resilience and the enduring presence of humanity.
