A massive wildfire near Glossop in Derbyshire has been challenging firefighters across the nation. The Tintwistle Moor fire has scorched approximately 1,630 acres in Derbyshire’s Peak District since igniting on June 24. An emergency was declared on July 13, leading to a concerted effort from firefighters nationwide to contain the extensive blaze.

The magnitude of the fire has strained firefighting resources significantly, with Clive Stanbrook, the deputy chief officer for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, characterizing the operation as intricate and demanding. Firefighters have segmented the affected area into distinct sectors, including Didsbury, Crowden, Arnfield, and Featherbed Moss.

Approximately 65 firefighters from Derbyshire and other parts of the UK, along with support from organizations like the Fire Operations Group, are actively engaged in combating the Tintwistle Moor wildfire. Driven by a rotational system, many more firefighters are being mobilized as needed. Dr. Kirsten Lees, an environmental sciences lecturer specializing in zero carbon at the University of Derby, stated that the ongoing Tintwistle fire ranks as one of the largest wildfires witnessed in England and shows no signs of abating soon.

Rob Kenning, a ranger team manager with the Peak District National Park Authority, mentioned initiatives such as employing seasonal rangers to patrol fire-prone areas in the evenings to deter wildfires, particularly in tourist-attracting regions during summer. Authorities have also begun imposing fines of £1,000 on individuals using barbeques in certain Peak District zones.

Apart from the Derbyshire incident, the Fire Brigades Union reported that a staggering 40,000 hectares have been consumed by wildfires in various regions across 1,000 incidents over the past year. As of July 6, fire and rescue services in England and Wales have responded to 342 wildfires in 2026, prompting the Fire Brigades Union to advocate for a government summit to enhance resilience against future fires and recruit an additional 5,000 firefighters nationwide.
