Holidaymakers from the UK have shared their harrowing experience of fleeing a wildfire in close proximity. The alarming incidents occurred amid the evacuation of 270,000 individuals due to ongoing wildfires in various parts of Southern Europe.
Firefighters were prepared to deploy fire-suppressing chemicals from a cargo plane in the Gironde region of Western France, where a massive blaze has been raging since Wednesday. Concerns have heightened as the wind direction changed, posing a significant threat of the flames reaching the nearby city of Bordeaux. This prompted authorities to issue evacuation orders for residents located between the fire and the city, encompassing parts of western suburbs and surrounding towns.
The French military and Spanish government have mobilized resources to combat the fires, with a national emergency declared in Spain. Among those affected was David Morton and his family, who narrowly escaped the main fire in Cap Ferret peninsula by just 500 yards. Describing the intense situation, Morton mentioned the towering flames and swift evacuation process they underwent.
Another witness, Zac Morrison, described the chaotic scene of gendarmerie officials evacuating residents door-to-door, resembling a scene from a movie. Many evacuees have sought refuge in schools, warehouses, and beaches, awaiting further instructions. Despite the alarming situation, some British tourists have relocated to different regions in France to continue their holidays.
Despite the escalating wildfires, the Foreign Office opted not to issue travel warnings for France or Spain. French minister Éléonore Caroit assured tourists that many regions remain unaffected, urging travelers to proceed with their plans while remaining vigilant.
In Madrid, efforts are underway to contain fires in the outskirts, with authorities struggling to prevent multiple fires from merging. The fires have disrupted operations at a Nasa facility near the Spanish capital, with regional authorities labeling it as the worst fire incident in the region’s history.
The unprecedented heat waves and record-breaking temperatures have transformed forests and scrublands into highly flammable environments, leading to extensive wildfires. European nations, including Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, have joined forces to support firefighting operations in Spain and France.
Additionally, emergency services are battling a major blaze in the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland, which has been declared a major incident. Smoke from the fire has been visible up to 59 miles away in Aberdeen. Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, emphasized the importance of avoiding affected areas and highlighted ongoing efforts to contain the fire.
