A man recounted a frightening experience when he was forcibly pushed into his door by a massive blast that ripped through the rural area of Essex. Authorities declared a critical situation as a significant explosion occurred, leading to the evacuation of residents following the detonation of a large container of fertiliser amidst efforts to extinguish a fire between East Hanningfield and Rettendon.
The intense fire, which consumed industrial structures and a field, generated a massive fireball and a shockwave that reverberated up to 15 miles away. Firefighters continued their presence at the site the next morning after battling the flames throughout the night.
Scott Johnson, a 46-year-old wedding photographer from Chelmsford, Galleywood, witnessed the explosion firsthand, describing the force as so strong that it propelled him into his studio door. Recalling the moment, he expressed astonishment at the unprecedented event, emphasizing how debris and flames descended around him, narrowly avoiding serious harm.
Despite the damage sustained to his studio, Scott managed to salvage most of his valuable equipment from the location situated within the industrial estate. The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service mobilized a large team of 100 firefighters at the peak response period, conducting evacuations in the vicinity of the blast while advising residents to secure their premises due to the dense smoke clouds.
Approximately 50 firefighters remain on-site the following morning to extinguish the remnants of the fire. Officials, including Group Manager Dave Walpole and Area Manager Dave Bond, indicated that the operation will persist, urging caution as smoke continues to be emitted. An extensive investigation into the fire’s cause is expected to be conducted.
