Donald Trump has justified imposing new tariffs on imports from the UK and numerous other countries amidst a legal challenge against the decision. The US President has implemented duties on 60 nations to replace previous tariffs that were deemed illegal by the US Supreme Court when they expired on Friday.
During a statement in the Oval Office, the US president described the new levies as standard tariffs that align with existing policies. The White House defended the imposition of charges by asserting that the targeted economies had not effectively enforced prohibitions on goods manufactured through slave labor.
This action coincided with the conclusion of a temporary 10% import tax, which Britain had been subject to, introduced after the Supreme Court invalidated Mr. Trump’s initial broad global tariffs. Mr. Trump expressed his disagreement with the Court’s decision and emphasized the administration’s use of various forms of tariffs.
Following a legal challenge by a campaign group on behalf of two small US businesses in the US Court of International Trade in New York, seeking to oppose the latest import taxes, the Liberty Justice Centre has endeavored to overturn the replacement levies. The group’s chairman, Sara Albrecht, highlighted the administration’s swift replacement of tariffs under a different statute after the expiration of a global tariff.
The centre’s senior lawyer, Jeffrey Schwab, pointed out that the legislative provision relied upon by the White House was specific to targeted countries and practices, and not a broad authorization to tax imports from all countries at predetermined rates.
The UK Government clarified that the tariff rate for UK businesses remains unchanged at 10% despite the recent announcement. The UK exports more to the US than any other single country, and the Economic Prosperity Deal established between the two countries aims to lessen the impact of US tariffs on UK industries and enhance commercial relations.
In other developments, the US has lifted import duties on Scotch whisky. President Trump announced the removal of the whisky tariff in April following the state visit by the King and Queen, signaling a positive step in trade relations between the two countries.
