“Beware Cold Water Shock: Heatwave Risks”

With soaring temperatures this week, many people are flocking to beaches, lakes, and rivers to beat the heat. However, while the land may be hot, the water remains cold and poses a drowning risk. We recently visited the Extreme Environments Lab at the University of Portsmouth to explore the dangers of cold water shock.

During our visit, we conducted an experiment where I spent 10 minutes in a specialized plunge pool set at 15°C, equivalent to the average sea temperature in the UK. The room temperature was maintained at 28°C to simulate the current heatwave conditions.

Prior to entering the water, my gasp rate, measuring oxygen intake, was at a normal level of 0.3 liters. Upon immersion, it spiked to 1.5 liters, a level that could lead to drowning if submerged. Additionally, my heart rate increased from a resting 80 beats per minute to 110, causing blood vessels to constrict and potentially leading to heart complications or cardiac arrest, even in young individuals. Cold water shock, triggering gasping or heart failure, contributes to about 60% of drowning incidents.

Exposure to cold water also affects dexterity, as demonstrated by a decrease in typing speed after spending time in the pool. Infrared cameras revealed a significant drop in body heat post-immersion, highlighting the body’s response to cold water.

Furthermore, testing the pool’s flume feature showcased the physical challenge of swimming against strong currents in cold water, leading to fatigue and breathlessness even for experienced swimmers.

Professor Mike Tipton from the University of Portsmouth emphasized the dangers of cold shock, emphasizing the importance of staying aware of one’s abilities in cold water and the risks posed by sudden temperature changes. He advised swimming parallel to the shore and staying within safe depths to prevent accidents.

Following recent incidents of drownings, including tragic cases involving young individuals, safety organizations are urging the public to prioritize water safety during the ongoing heatwaves. With temperatures expected to rise further, health alerts have been issued, emphasizing the need for caution and preparedness.

For those facing difficulties in the water, the RNLI recommends the ‘Float to Live’ technique, promoting relaxation and controlled breathing to enhance survival chances. Additionally, bystanders are encouraged to follow the ‘Phone, Float, Throw’ method when witnessing someone in distress, ensuring swift assistance.

The Mirror’s ‘Save Lives For Sam’ campaign advocates for improved water safety measures, including education, awareness campaigns, and enhanced emergency response protocols, to prevent further tragedies. As the heatwave persists, staying informed and vigilant is crucial to safeguarding lives in and around water bodies.
