Andy Burnham, the newly appointed Prime Minister, has rejected the notion of holding a snap election shortly after assuming office. Burnham confirmed his commitment to implementing Labour’s 2024 election manifesto while inaugurating a new government center in Manchester known as Number 10 North. Despite becoming the seventh British Prime Minister in a decade, Burnham has dismissed the idea of an imminent General Election.
Responding to inquiries about a potential snap election, Burnham stated, “No, I’m not. I don’t believe it’s appropriate.” Emphasizing that the government’s current priority is to “make the country work,” Burnham underscored his intention to adhere to the 2024 manifesto, stating, “We need to concentrate on ensuring the country functions.”
In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, Burnham emphasized his commitment to upholding the manifesto’s principles, emphasizing the need to prioritize national functionality over election considerations. He highlighted his aspiration to approach politics differently, drawing from his experience as the former Mayor of Greater Manchester.
Recently, Burnham inaugurated the No 10 North headquarters at Heron House in Manchester, where he plans to operate weekly during his tenure. The decision to establish a base in the north, according to Burnham, aims to rebalance power across the nation.
During the opening ceremony, Burnham was accompanied by Chancellor John Healey, First Secretary of State Louise Haigh, and Cabinet Secretary Antonia Romeo. Subsequently, Burnham convened with local leaders, including regional mayors like Steve Rotheram of Liverpool and Andrea Jenkyns of Greater Lincolnshire, to discuss the cost-saving benefits of the new northern headquarters.
Addressing concerns about the headquarters being a mere symbolic gesture, Burnham defended the move, highlighting the presence of key government officials in Manchester as a step towards redistributing power throughout the country. He expressed enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “I love the job,” and acknowledged the challenges and rewards of assuming the Prime Minister’s responsibilities.
