A massive fire is currently raging through a popular tourist area in Italy, leading to the evacuation of over 100 individuals. The extensive wildfire has spread to Santo Stefano Quisquina town in the Agrigento province, situated just an hour and a half from Palermo in Sicily. The vicinity of this well-liked holiday destination is significantly impacted, with large columns of dense smoke rising into the sky.

As a precautionary measure, more than 100 people have been evacuated, amid concerns about the proximity of an oxygen depot, a medical clinic, a petrol station, and a fireworks factory to the flames. A substantial firefighting operation is ongoing, with the deployment of Canadairs, specialized aircraft for aerial firefighting.

The fire’s intensity is being fueled by sirocco winds, a hot, dry wind laden with dust that originates in the Sahara Desert and blows northward across the Mediterranean Sea into southern Europe. According to reports from L’Unione Sarda, the situation has been described as “dramatic” by Francesco Cacciatore, the mayor of Santo Stefano di Quisquina.

The mayor has urgently advised residents in the Canfuto and Bosco districts to evacuate immediately, with a road closure enforced in both directions on the 118 state road Corleonese Agrigentina. Additionally, in Agrigento, the fire has encroached upon the Andromeda Theatre’s perimeter. Meanwhile, fires have also broken out in Catania, prompting firefighting responses to at least 11 wildfire incidents.

Further reports indicate fires along the motorway connecting Palermo and Catania, with central Palermo experiencing several power outages. Families not directly in the path of the flames have barricaded themselves indoors to shield against the smoke, as per La Republica. The extreme heat has led to red-hot railings and doorknobs, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in the city by 4 am.
