After a prolonged period of hot and dry conditions, the Met Office predicts that much-needed rainfall will arrive this week. The recent heatwave in the UK saw temperatures exceeding 30C for 13 consecutive days, with central and south-east England experiencing the longest spell without recorded rainfall in the 21st century.
The lack of rain has raised concerns for agriculture and led to wildfires in various parts of the UK. However, relief is on the horizon as showers are expected in some regions this week.
According to the latest Week Ahead forecast from the Met Office, meteorologist Clare Nasir anticipates “patchy rain” in the far north and north-west of Scotland, with some scattered showers in Northern Ireland. Temperatures in central Scotland, South Wales, central England, and the south-east are projected to reach 25-26C, a decrease from the previous week’s extreme heat.
Tomorrow, a weather front is expected to bring more showery rain, particularly in the far north of Scotland. Eastern parts of Wales, central and southern England are forecasted to be the warmest regions, with temperatures potentially reaching 25-27C across a large part of the UK.
Thursday will see increasing humidity and more rain showers, especially along the east coast. The weather maps indicate rain in central England, although the showers are expected to be scattered and light.
Bright and sunny conditions are predicted for most areas on Thursday, with temperatures peaking at 25-26C in Wales, central England, and southern England. Scotland and Northern Ireland are likely to maintain similar temperatures to Wednesday.
On Friday, showery rain is expected in central and northern Scotland, while other areas will experience sunny spells. Temperatures may reach 28C in London, with South Wales, the Midlands, and Yorkshire seeing highs of 24-25C, and Northern Ireland and central Scotland around 21-22C.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the Met Office forecasts an increase in rainfall as high pressure weakens, allowing weather fronts to become more active and move southwards. This shift is anticipated to bring much-needed rain to central and northern parts of the UK that have been exceptionally dry in recent weeks.
