A man tragically took the life of his mother after learning of his father’s passing from her. Simon Carter, who had been distant from his mother Gwyneth Carter for nearly two decades, unexpectedly visited her residence in Macclesfield on July 12, 2025, seeking information about his father.
Following Gwyneth’s disclosure that his father had passed away two years prior, Simon departed after a brief 10-15 minute interaction. Concerned about Simon’s demeanor during the visit, Gwyneth expressed uncertainty to her sister Janis about his potential substance use and unusual behavior.
Upon unsuccessful attempts to reach Gwyneth through calls and messages, Janis visited her home on July 18 and sought help from a neighbor. Tragically, Gwyneth was discovered deceased at the scene, having sustained multiple injuries to her head and neck.
Simon was brought before Chester Crown Court and received an indeterminate section 37 hospital order with a section 41 restriction under the Mental Health Act 1983. Since his apprehension on July 20, 2025, he has been detained under the Mental Health Act.
Living in Torquay at the time, Simon was arrested based on substantial forensic evidence linking him to the scene through his DNA and footwear. A plea of manslaughter by diminished responsibility was accepted due to compelling medical evidence indicating undiagnosed mental health issues.

It was evident that Simon exhibited erratic behavior and likely suffered from undiagnosed mental health conditions, subsequently leading to the acceptance of diminished responsibility manslaughter.
