A prominent football journalist has tragically met a violent end, being shot and then set on fire, sending shockwaves through the sports community. Concerns arose when friends lost contact with Luigi ‘Luca’ Esposito, aged 53, on Saturday evening. Firefighters responded to a fire in a remote field in Salerno, Italy, where they discovered his burnt body in the early hours of Sunday, July 19. Authorities in Salerno, led by anti-mafia chief Raffaele Cantone, are treating the incident as a homicide. Bullet casings were found near the victim’s body, and his car was located nearby, aiding in his identification. An autopsy will determine the precise cause of death. Investigators are delving into Luigi’s personal life, exploring potential motives such as financial or emotional conflicts. No theories have been ruled out by the police. Originally from Nocera Inferiore and a devoted Salernitana 1919 supporter, the victim operated TuttoSalernitana.com and contributed as a columnist for La Città di Salerno. He was also a regular commentator on OttoChannel TV, covering Serie B teams like Avellino and Juve Stabia. Described as outspoken and well-connected in the football sphere, colleagues praised his fearless nature. Pierluigi Melillo, the director of OttoChannel, remembered Luigi as a valuable contributor with strong opinions on football. The team was deeply shocked by the brutal nature of the incident. With a substantial following on Instagram, Luigi held degrees in biology and literature. His sister noted that he was a peaceful individual without any known adversaries. As police continue their investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with Luigi’s tragic death.
