Andy Burnham, in one of his initial actions as Prime Minister, has declared the elimination of VAT on electricity bills. The move, aimed at alleviating the burden of living costs, is anticipated to reduce the average bill by £45. The funding for this measure, estimated at £850 million for 2026-27, will be sourced from savings due to the termination of the digital ID program, as stated by Downing Street.

Addressing the ongoing struggles faced by families with the cost of living, Mr. Burnham emphasized the need for change in how Westminster operates. He highlighted his commitment to providing breathing space for the public by announcing immediate tax cuts on energy bills to inject more money into households and revive optimism.

The Government confirmed the removal of VAT from domestic electricity bills starting from October 1, with the forthcoming price cap announcement set for late August. Moreover, small businesses eligible for domestic energy VAT relief, charities, and residential care homes qualifying for the reduced rate will also witness a reduction in their bills.

Newly appointed Chancellor John Healey MP expressed that the energy tax cut would offer families some respite on bills and enhance winter reassurance. He noted that the measure, funded through the cancellation of the Digital ID program, would aid in curbing inflation while supporting households nationwide.

As Mr. Burnham prepares to convene the revamped Cabinet for the first time, significant changes are expected in ministerial ranks. The Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to assisting financially strained Britons and pledged urgent action to provide them with relief on the cost of living.

Further initiatives to address long-term cost-of-living challenges are slated for unveiling in the upcoming autumn budget. The Prime Minister’s administration aims to usher in a new political and economic paradigm to rectify the enduring repercussions of past policies, aiming to rebuild communities and foster progress.
