Donald Trump has declared that Iran will face consequences for the deaths of three US troops, promising retaliation. The president’s warning came after the American military conducted additional strikes, leading to retaliatory actions by Tehran. These escalations, coupled with the breakdown of a temporary ceasefire agreement, have raised concerns about a return to all-out conflict.
US Central Command reported that two soldiers were killed in Jordan while defending against Iranian missile and drone assaults. Another service member died in Iraq during the disposal of an Iranian drone. The total number of US military casualties in the conflict now stands at 17.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that Iran would pay a heavy price for any harm inflicted on American soldiers. He emphasized that this directive had been communicated to defense secretary Pete Hegseth, top general Dan Caine, and other military leaders.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt disclosed that Trump would attend the return of the fallen service members at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. Meanwhile, Iranian authorities reported over 50 deaths and more than 500 injuries due to recent US strikes.
Following Trump’s warning, the US defense department shared a message on X featuring a soldier from the revolutionary era, highlighting the readiness to confront and defeat enemies without mercy. Simultaneously, Iran has targeted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, while the US has enforced a naval blockade of Iranian ports to secure control of the crucial Gulf waterway essential for global energy supplies.
The conflict has significantly disrupted maritime traffic in the strait, prompting concerns about its impact on economies worldwide, including the UK. The situation in the Middle East and the strait’s strategic importance were discussed between newly appointed Prime Minister Andy Burnham and the US president.
The strait was initially open before the US and Israel initiated the conflict on February 28. Tehran responded by closing the waterway, leading to disruptions in global oil and gas supplies, causing price hikes. Despite an initial ceasefire agreement with the US, Iran has maintained control over the sea route by imposing restrictions on ship movements and threatening vessels.
While Tehran claims authority over the strait, the US and other nations dispute this, citing international law on freedom of navigation. US secretary of state Marco Rubio expressed willingness to engage in negotiations with Iran but emphasized the need for genuine dialogue to de-escalate tensions.
Rubio underscored the importance of diplomatic opportunities but acknowledged the current lack of progress in that direction.
