The attorney representing social media personalities Andrew and Tristan Tate, known for their controversial content, has declared plans to oppose their extradition to the United Kingdom to face charges related to rape and sex trafficking. The lawyer, Joe McBride, asserted that the Tates are victims of what he termed a “political witch hunt.”
Addressing reporters outside a Miami courthouse, McBride contended that his clients were under attack for their expressions rather than their actions, criticizing the UK as a nation that prosecutes its citizens for exercising free speech. He drew parallels to other cases, citing the arrest of a woman praying outside an abortion clinic and referencing political figure Tommy Robinson as being targeted for his free speech activities.
McBride also hinted at the potential involvement of US President Donald Trump in the extradition process, arguing that Trump was elected to combat such issues. The Tate brothers, who hold citizenship in both the US and UK, were apprehended by US marshals and were scheduled to appear in court following additional charges pressed by British authorities.
Andrew Tate, aged 39, faced new accusations including multiple rape charges, trafficking for sexual exploitation, assault causing bodily harm, and various offenses related to indecent images and extreme pornography. Tristan Tate, aged 38, was charged with sexual assault, rape, and trafficking for sexual exploitation.
The Crown Prosecution Service disclosed that the 38 fresh charges, alongside the existing 21 charges, spanned alleged crimes from July 2010 to August 2017. The Tate brothers have consistently denied any wrongdoing.
McBride emphasized their intent to contest the extradition, denouncing the added charges as inflammatory and unfounded. He underscored the importance of protecting free speech rights, maintaining that the accusations were intended to prejudice public opinion.
Regarding the legal process, McBride anticipated a duration of approximately 60 days, subject to potential adjustments based on developments. He expressed confidence in challenging the extradition, highlighting the principles of democracy and freedom of expression in the face of what he described as a politically motivated pursuit.
