Britons could potentially experience the hottest day ever recorded in the UK, with weather models indicating temperatures could soar as high as 41C. The current highest temperature on record stands at 40.3C, set during the scorching heatwave of July 2022. However, recent data suggests that temperatures may climb to 41C as another heatwave approaches.
The Met Office has forecasted a return to very warm conditions by the beginning of August. According to the GFS weather model, temperatures are expected to increase steadily starting from July 29, with potential highs of 31C in the south-east of England. Southern England could see temperatures of 30C on July 30, followed by possible highs of 31C in the southwest on July 31. Wales might also experience temperatures reaching 30C on July 31, as indicated by the GFS model.
On August 1, the GFS model predicts a significant surge in temperatures. Remarkably high temperatures of 41C are projected for eastern England, with areas from Sussex to Lincolnshire, including London, likely to hit 40C. The Midlands could see highs of 38C, while Yorkshire may experience temperatures of 37C. Parts of Wales near the English border might reach 31C or 32C, with Scotland and Northern Ireland expected to have lower peak temperatures.
Temperature anomaly maps for August 31 illustrate England and Wales shaded in deep red and black, indicating temperatures well above the seasonal average in those regions. The GFS model suggests that ten counties in eastern England could witness temperatures of 40C or higher.
Looking ahead, the Met Office anticipates warm conditions for the remainder of July, particularly in the southern regions. The forecast also hints at the likelihood of temperatures turning very warm again at the start of August. Further warm spells are expected in the latter part of August, with temperatures likely to remain above normal, especially in the southern areas.
Despite the heat, there is a chance of storms, with occasional summertime thunderstorms possible on some days, according to the Met Office’s forecast. While dry weather is expected for much of the period, the potential for thunderstorms remains if the right conditions align.
