A man has passed away, and another is in a critical condition following an incident in the sea at North Tyneside, according to the police.
Authorities were alerted to two individuals in distress in the waters off Cullercoats beach around 6:30 pm on Sunday, as reported by Northumbria Police.
An emergency response team successfully retrieved the men from the water, but unfortunately, one of them, a man in his twenties, died at the scene.
The second man, also in his twenties, was transported to a hospital where he is currently in serious but stable condition, as confirmed by Northumbria Police.
Family members of both men have been notified and are receiving assistance, the police mentioned.
Witnesses described the sea conditions as challenging, with waves reaching heights of about three to four feet when the men disappeared, as per Chronicle Live.
Julie Anne, a regular swimmer at the beach, observed the extensive rescue operation with multiple individuals deploying a rescue buoy into the water.
Chief Inspector Simon Wotton from Northumbria Police expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event, extending sympathies to all affected individuals.
He appreciated the collaborative efforts of partner agencies during the operation and urged the public to be considerate of those involved’s privacy.
The RNLI spokesperson mentioned that they were alerted by the coastguard on Sunday, July 19th, and promptly initiated a response to a person in distress in the water as part of a joint operation.
