Santander has decided to discontinue sending customers an annual statement detailing any fees incurred. This statement typically outlines charges accrued over the previous year, such as overdraft fees or foreign transaction fees associated with card usage.

For instance, Santander’s current accounts commonly impose a standard variable rate of 39.94% for arranged overdrafts. In addition to fees, the annual statement also reflects any interest accrued. Starting from August, this statement will no longer be issued, as customers can conveniently monitor and review their fees through online or mobile banking services.

In a positive development for customers, Santander recently introduced a new regular savings account offering an attractive 8% interest rate. This account enables savers to set aside a fixed amount each month in exchange for a higher interest rate. The account comes with an initial 8% rate, inclusive of a 5% bonus for the first year, which later adjusts to 3%. The rates are subject to change as they are variable.

Customers utilizing this regular saver account from Santander can save up to £200 per month, potentially accumulating up to £2,504 with interest in the first year, and £5,018 by the second year. Withdrawals are permitted without penalties, but funds must be transferred to a Santander current account. This exclusive regular saver account is accessible only to Santander current account holders.

The decision to eliminate the annual fee statement comes following Banco Santander’s announcement of cost-cutting initiatives exceeding 500 million euros (£433 million) through the accelerated integration of artificial intelligence (AI). The bank aims to generate over one billion euros (£860 billion) in additional revenues and cost savings by leveraging AI by 2028, with a significant portion anticipated from cost reductions.

The cost-saving measures are anticipated to stem from enhanced automation, productivity enhancements, and streamlined processes. While the impact on jobs remains undisclosed, the group has not indicated any workforce reduction plans related to the AI implementation.
