Diners at a restaurant in Birmingham experienced a frightening ordeal when an assailant wielding a baseball bat and knife targeted them following an attack on a pregnant woman. The unsettling incident unfolded at Al-Qamar restaurant on Vincent Street in Balsall Heath. The pregnant woman sought refuge in the restaurant, seeking help from Akilah Bennett and her family, who were preparing to leave. The woman, visibly distressed, ran into their arms, recounting the attack she had just endured.
Shortly after, a man brandishing a baseball bat appeared outside the restaurant, initially leading some to believe he had a connection to the woman. However, it became apparent that he was a stranger to her. Ms. Bennett, 31, shared her account of the events, describing how her uncle bravely shielded the woman from the attacker’s blows. The owner of the restaurant recognized the assailant as a local resident of Balsall Heath.
The attacker was eventually driven off by Ms. Bennett’s uncle and others, only to return wielding a knife. In response, Ms. Bennett took quick action, ushering everyone inside the restaurant to safety. Despite the tense situation, the owner of the establishment ensured the protection of all present.
Law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene after receiving reports of the assault. The injured woman was taken to the hospital with a serious arm injury. West Midlands Police confirmed the incident occurred just before 10 p.m. on July 14 on Vincent Street. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and seeking information from witnesses to aid in their investigation.
Ms. Bennett expressed disappointment that such a distressing incident interrupted what had been a pleasant dining experience, praising the restaurant staff for their handling of the situation.
