The individual responsible for the tragic death of James Bulger is seeking legal action to prevent the victim’s parents from attending his upcoming parole hearing. Jon Venables, now 43 years old, was granted a new hearing last year, but he has contested the decision allowing James’ parents, Ralph, 59, and Denise, 57, to be present at the review. This challenge has postponed the hearing, originally scheduled for August, with expectations now set for September at the earliest.
According to sources, this development has caused additional distress to the Bulger family, who have been preparing for the hearing for over a year. The family, who were anticipating the opportunity to share impact statements at the parole hearing, are now left questioning their role as victims in this situation.
Venables’ refusal to attend the hearing if James’ parents are present has further intensified the situation. His past actions, which shocked the nation in 1993 when he abducted and murdered James Bulger, have led to his current stance. Despite being granted lifetime anonymity, Venables has expressed his unwillingness to face the victim’s family directly during the hearing.
In a previous instance in 2023, Venables failed to appear in person at a parole hearing, citing concerns about his mental well-being if confronted by the victim’s family. Following this, in December of the same year, the Parole Board concluded that Venables still posed a significant threat to children, leading to the decision that he would not be considered for release.
The Mirror has reached out to the Parole Board for a statement regarding this matter.
