The family of a 19-year-old kayaker, Michael Henry, who is believed to have died after going missing off the coast of Northumberland, expressed their sorrow and paid tribute to their beloved son.

Michael Henry and a friend were in a two-man kayak that capsized near Boulmer in Northumberland on July 7. While the friend managed to reach a buoy and was rescued by the coastguard, extensive searches for Michael were unsuccessful, leading Northumbria Police to conclude the operation.

In a heartfelt statement, Michael’s family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support, highlighting his role as a cherished son, brother, grandson, nephew, team-mate, and friend. They described Michael as an avid sportsman who enjoyed the outdoors, with plans to travel and begin university in the upcoming academic year.

Chief Inspector Jon Caisley conveyed his deepest sympathies to Michael’s family and friends, acknowledging the tragic outcome of the search efforts. Despite thorough searches at sea and along the coast, Michael remains missing and is presumed to have passed away at sea, impacting both his loved ones and the broader community.

Mr. Caisley commended the collaborative efforts of officers and partners involved in the search and urged respect for the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
