A Caribbean band’s lead singer expressed her disbelief and sorrow over the tragic loss of five band members in a devastating plane crash. Shaniese Miller, the vocalist of Da Pond Band, recounted the harrowing incident that occurred in the Bahamas when a small aircraft operated by Flamingo Air crashed, claiming the lives of all 10 individuals on board.

The band, renowned for their captivating Caribbean music performances, was en route to an Independence Day event on Andros Island alongside a DJ when the calamity unfolded. Departing from Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau, the flight, which typically lasts under 20 minutes, was bound for San Andros but tragically crashed in North Andros, as reported by the Bahamian Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority.

In an emotional interview with CBS, Miller expressed her profound shock and loss, describing the departed band members as her family whom she never expected to lose. Just a week prior, she had joyously performed with the band in Nassau, reminiscing about their excitement for the upcoming gig on Andros Island.

The deceased band members were identified as Giovanni McKenzie, Mateo Winder, Rashad Storr, Tonique Gilot, Travis Johnson, and DJ Fresh, also known as Melvin Henfield. Another band vocalist, Shenia Roberts, had arrived on the same ill-fated plane earlier that day, sharing that although the aircraft seemed dated, there were no apparent issues during the flight.

Reflecting on her close bond with her bandmates, Roberts conveyed her deep sorrow and described them as her companions and pillars of support. The tragic loss deeply impacted her daily life, filled with interactions with the band and their shared passion for music.

Prime Minister Philip Davis of the Bahamas offered condolences to the victims’ families, emphasizing the need for empathy, privacy, and support during the investigation. The Bahamas Musicians and Entertainers Union paid tribute to the departed individuals, acknowledging their significant contributions to enriching the cultural landscape of the Bahamas.

While the names of three non-performing passengers on the flight have not been disclosed, Bahamian authorities are actively investigating the crash. Flamingo Air temporarily halted all flights following multiple emergency incidents on the same day, including another aircraft catching fire post-landing in Nassau.

Bahamian officials are diligently probing the circumstances leading to the tragic crash, as reported by CBS. The community mourns the loss of these talented entertainers and extends heartfelt sympathy to their families and loved ones during this difficult time.
